Interesting Facts

The origin of FingerQiGong

The Chinese are convinced that a steady circulation of the so-called life energy (Qi) in the body is to be equated with health. This - in the most true sense of the word - natural energy or energy of nature is also described in many cultures. The Egyptians call it Ka, the Greeks Pneuma, the Maya Lil, the Polynesia Mana, the Japanese Ki, the Tibetans Lung, the Hindus Prana, the Sufis Baraka and the Africans Mingo. Ajurveda uses the concept Ojas for the life energy.

By spinning small balls (names for the balls that are mostly used are: chinese health balls, stress balls, exercise balls, qi gong balls, tai chi balls, and baoding iron balls) in the hand (FingerQiGong) a technology/practise (in Chinese called gong) exists for the cultivation, i.e. activation, control, refinement and strengthening, of this personal life energy. the millennium-long experience in China teaches that the ball movements unfold not only a medical, but also en important healthwise preventive effect. this technology belongs to the chinese Qi-gong (the ancient art of self healing) doctrine.

From the history of China it is known, that originally, already B.C., wild walnuts were used to stimulate the fingers. It is therefore to be assumed, that first wooden balls were made and used to be followed by course stone balls. Then the age of the metal processing allowed that from the 14th century, during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644), on in the north of China, in the Baoding region, for the first time massive iron balls could be produced. Baoding, China is said to have three treasures. The first is the iron ball, the second is a sauce made from fermented flour, and the third is potherb mustard. These treasures have been passed down through the generations for over 300 hundred years. Later on hollow steel balls were developed with built in sound bodies. From the 18th century on artistic creations of the surfaces of the metal balls, which are progressing till this day, began - for example the decorated balls with Cloisonné. however, these are not as suitable for actual use because they can easily chip when dropped or when they come into contact with each other.

The variety in balls

The smallest balls for the sensible use are about 30 mm, the biggest about 80 mm in diameter. The most current dimensions are 30, 40 and 50 mm. Of course advancers in the art of FingerQiGong use additional sizes.

Initially one pair of balls in the personally fitting size is enough. Indeed, all dimensions should exist to the advancement of the ball movements in 5 mm steps from 30 – 60 mm. The smaller in metal and/or stone and the bigger in stone and/or wood. There are plastic balls also in all variations, dimensions and weight classes.

By the way, it makes fun to collect balls in different sizes and materials. Collectors are, as well known, more contented people, because they take pleasure over and over again in increasing their collection. On the other hand, collecting balls motivates to practice and therefore sometime to attain the mastery in the art of FingerQiGong.

Balls can roughly be classified in five different materials:

  • Wooden balls (hardwood & softwood)

  • Other balls (glass balls, porcelain balls, magnet balls,  massage balls etc.)
  • Balls (base-, tennis-, hand-, golfballs etc.)

The widespread steel sound balls (Chinese healthy balls) are pleasant to practice with every now and then. However, for regular practicing they are rather unsuitable, because the sound is not always welcome. The more sensitive the body becomes through practice, the more intensive you feel the sounds, vibrations and the very impressively accompanying high-level tones.
